CFA: the Japanese perspective

While endovascular treatment of common femoral artery (CFA) disease continues to gain traction in Europe, the approach in Japan remains markedly different.

In this PVI 2025 interview, Dr Hideaki Obara explains why Japanese vascular surgeons still consider open surgery the gold standard for most CFA lesions.
Drawing on data from a prospective multicenter study evaluating common femoral endarterectomy with bovine pericardial patch angioplasty, he highlights the low complication rates achieved with surgery and discusses how these findings compare with endovascular data, including the TECCO trial.
