Drug-coated balloons: what long-term outcomes and pharmacokinetics tell us

In this short interview, Prof. Bibombe Patrice Mwipatayi discusses two studies presented during PVI 2025, exploring the long-term outcomes of drug-coated balloon (DCB) angioplasty in patients with critical limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) and the pharmacokinetic profile of a novel sirolimus-derivative DCB. 

First, he reviews 5-year outcomes following DCB treatment, highlighting the higher burden of adverse outcomes observed in patients with CLTI compared with those with intermittent claudication. 

He then presents the BRight DCB first-in-human study, discussing the clinical results of this novel limus-derivative balloon alongside its pharmacokinetic profile. 

Prof. Mwipatayi also shares his perspective on the interactive format of the PVI Course and what makes it a unique setting for discussing new evidence and exchanging perspectives in vascular medicine.
