AAA update: selection, failure prediction & safety
This PVI 2025 session provides an update on abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) management, spanning treatment thresholds, patient selection, prediction of EVAR outcomes, and radiation safety in the hybrid OR.
It first questions current AAA repair thresholds, suggesting a more conservative approach and the need to treat fewer aneurysms overall. It then highlights the importance of refined patient selection through risk stratification for open and endovascular repair, using individual risk profiles to better guide treatment strategy.
Attention then shifts to early prediction of EVAR failure, with a focus on post-operative imaging and the relationship between planned and achieved sealing zones as a key indicator of future secondary interventions.
The session concludes with a discussion on radiation protection in the hybrid OR, clarifying what is truly effective in daily practice and emphasising the combined role of behavioural optimisation, consistency, and technological advances.
By watching this session, you will learn how to identify patients at risk of secondary EVAR procedures, integrate radiation protection into daily practice, and refine patient-specific AAA management strategies.
